It has been almost 4 years since Nathan's arrest, so I thought I would update everyone and share some good news! Nathan was released from state custody on March 26, 2011, after serving almost 4 years for this horrible PTSD related incident. That was 4 years that he never received ANY treatment for his PTSD. Needless to say, incarceration benefits no one who has war related trauma, so he has a whole new set of issues to deal with now. Adjusting to being back in society after a long incarceration has it's draw backs. As ordered by the judge, he is now in Miami, in an inpatient PTSD program, where he will stay for 14 weeks. We still have a long road ahead of us, but things seem to be getting brighter every day. My advocacy has gone a long way towards promoting awareness of PTSD and the need for jail diversion programs and veteran's courts across the country. Where there were very few of them when Nathan was arrested, now there are almost 40, two of which are in Florida. Legislators are almost finished passing a bill in Florida to provide for a statewide jail diversion and treatment law for veterans who have PTSD. Even though this is too late for my son, there will be hope for other veterans who will follow in his footsteps. Thank you, ITB for bring this issue to the forefront and featuring our story, so that the public can really see what is happening to our returning veterans!
